Understanding Medicare Parts
Medicare has four main parts, each covering different services. Understanding them is step one.
Hospital Insurance
Inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility, hospice, and some home health. Most people pay no premium for Part A.
Medical Insurance
Outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and medical equipment. Requires a monthly premium.
Medicare Advantage
An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare from private insurers. Often includes Part D, dental, vision, and hearing.
Prescription Drugs
Adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare or some Medicare Advantage plans. Formularies vary by carrier.
